Since I have been teaching DISC to the Marines in Camp Lejeune, I have found myself in an interesting situation.
When I am describing the personality types, it is very difficult to get any traction with the Marines when it comes to the S personality. They have engrained in their heads that anybody more concerned with people than the task is weak, and are not hesitant to tell me so.
Now, I understand that sometimes we do things outside our personality type to acheive our basic needs. For example, an S might agree with those around them in order to "keep the peace". A D might take the time to encourage somebody and appear very personal and concerned in order to spur them on towards completion of the task.
At first, I thought that my technique was flawed. I tried explaining the S personality in different ways and using different words. However, I do not want to compromise the message for the audience.
What can I do do vary my approach or to better explain the S personality to a group of United States Marines?
